About Takayama
The name ‘Takayama’ in Japanese language means ‘Tall Mountain’ and 92.5% of its area is filled with deep forests and very, very tall mountains indeed. Takayama is the cradle of Japanese traditions and culture, just as it is located in the heart of Japan (Central Japan), about 160 km from Nagoya. It is home to the famous Takayama festivals, one of its many festivals, celebrating the arrival of spring and autumn, and meticulously-decorated festive floats are displayed and paraded in the streets.
Here, time appears to have stood still in the last 500 years, and one is able to enjoy the bliss and serenity of true but often-forgotten Japanese culture. Take a stroll or the human-labored rickshaws along the traditional streets in the Kamisanno district and you will witness fine Japanese architecture that has withstood the elements of time. Visit one of the morning markets and experience the friendliness and kindness of rural Japanese mannerisms. When time permits, visit Shirakawa-Go, a UNESCO World Heritage Village, where the entire village is a living monument.

Whichever way one travels to Takayama, and unless one is color-challenged, he or she is spellbound by the dramatic and picturesque scenes unfolding outside the window. Lush greenery (fire-red mountains or white winter wonderland - depending on the season) competes with pulsating streams, emerald-green rivers, and energetic water-falls along the way. Perhaps it is no exaggeration to say that the ride itself is an attraction. One is so mesmerized by the beauty of Mother Nature that the two hours’ ride seems too short to waste on a nap, or reading a book.
